Robertson Keeps Leadership Post
After reaching an impasse on the Tompkins County Legislature Chair position at the Jan. 3 legislature meeting, which resulted in nine separate votes being taken, county lawmakers reached a decision last week in a single ballot, with nine legislators voting for incumbent chairwoman Martha Robertson and five votingt for Mike Lane.

Town Prepares for Legal Battles
“The issue before the courts is not gas drilling,” clarifies Town of Ulysses Supervisor Roxanne Marino. Though gas drilling is the activity that triggered a lawsuit against the Town of Dryden, the question that the courts are being asked to decide is that of home rule.

Residents discuss town’s
energy needs
Prompted by Town Supervisor Ric Dietrich, a group of Danby residents met Jan. 12 to discuss the future of energy for the town and its citizens. In November, Dietrich asked the town board for permission to pull together a group that would research and advise the town on effective long-term strategies for sustainable/renewable energy sources. This was the group’s first meeting.

A new director for the
Ithaca YMCA
Sixteen years ago Frank Towner accepted the position of associate director of the Ithaca YMCA not knowing if he would move into the top slot. The national YMCA organization has a policy of “the best man for the job” and every potential director must submit to a national search and vetting.

Caroline joins Climate
Smart Program
The Caroline Town Board considered two new resolutions at its Jan. 10 meeting. One of them, the measure to join the Climate Smart Communities program, was tabled in order to give new board member Aaron Snow time to do some research. He said, “I’d like to check with my constituents and see what they think about this. I also want to know more about how it will benefit the town and the climate if we do this. I don’t want it to be an empty gesture.”

Ithaca Art Factory opens
its doors
Ed Marion stands in front of a painting he is working on in his cavernous, light-filled art studio. On the sound system, Louis Prima is leading a full orchestra and Marion is joined by students who are comparing their work to his and each other’s. Everyone is painting a pineapple, because all the students picked that subject. These are not master artists, and those with no experience are pleasantly surprised as they create the painting. All in just two hours from start to finish.
