Trumansburg Rotary Club seeks host families

Trumansburg Rotary Club will be hosting a district orientation program on Feb. 6 through 8. Exchange students come from all over the globe, and the Rotary Club is seeking families to host at least two students per home for two nights. Each student must have their own bed but can share a room with another student or host sibling.

Students will arrive at the High School Auditorium on Feb 6 by 6:30 p.m. and will be ready to meet host parents and be taken home.

On Feb. 7, host parents are asked to see that the students arrive at school in the morning at the usual start of school, where they will spend the day giving presentations about their home countries and customs to students in the high school and middle school. Students will be picked up at 5 p.m. at Atlas Bowl to spend the evening with host families, getting to know one another and about Rotary Youth Exchange around the world.

On the morning of Feb, 8, students will meet at the high school cafeteria at 9:30 a.m. for a day of orientation. A Rotarian from their host club will pick them up at the end of the orientation to take them home.

Trumansburg has been hosting Rotary Exchange youth exchange students since 1963 and has sponsored or hosted almost 200 young people over the years. Returning students tell Rotarians, “It was the best year of my life” and “It was a life-changing experience.”

Trumansburg Rotary appreciates families opening their home to these young people. Without your generosity, they would be unable to provide these opportunities for them, and the spirit of “exchange” makes it possible for us to send our own Trumansburg students abroad for a similar experience.

If you are interested in hosting students, please contact Kathleen Overbaugh, Trumansburg Rotary Club, home phone 607-387-5274, cell phone 607-592-2093, email kathleen@ottcmail.com.

Homelessness awareness

This presentation is with Carmen Guidi, who has worked countless hours with the homeless in the Ithaca area, especially the homeless that reside in what is known as the “Jungle.”

He is the founder of Second Wind Cottages, a not-for-profit organization that provides a place where homeless men can find a safe home in a beautiful setting with a supportive environment, learning the life skills necessary to reintegrate into society.

Second Wind is situated on seven acres of land in Newfield, and each single-room cottage has a bathroom, kitchenette and bed area and provides the time, space and relationships to mend broken lives.

The event is on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2 p.m., at the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church, 1869 Trumansburg Rd. Learn more at secondwindcottages.org.
